Ironpossum’s Blag

To blog with purpose!

Short story short, I have been doing a TON of personal projects and projects at work in the IT realm and I have decided I should be blogging about the many problems I come across and overcome. I often find forums or blogs that contain information that leads me there, but there’s usually not a single source that contains all this info, or maybe people post a problem and someone will provide a suggestion, but there’s nothing that said it works or not, or if it was mostly there but the actual fix is *this*. Anywho, I want to document these things here – for me and for you. Perhaps, though, I will find a different outlet for this information and will be able to create a knowledgebase or something… is wordpress good for a knowledgebase? Maybe something else? Anyone have suggestions before I start brain dumping here?

Random (nerd) thoughts

This was sent to me by a co-worker. I felt it was better than most “hey-let-me-forward-you-this” emails which is literally the only reason I’m bothering to post. Enjoy!

Random Thoughts for the Day

1. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer’s history if you die.
2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.
3. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.
4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
6. Was learning cursive really necessary?
7. Map Quest needs to start their directions on #5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my damn neighborhood.
8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
9. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired.
10. Bad decisions make good stories.
11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection…again.
13. I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to the ten-page paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.
14. “Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this—ever.
15. I hate it when I miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Man!), but when I immediately call back it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What’d you do after I didn’t answer? Drop the phone and run away?
16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.
17. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
18. My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day “What would happen if you ran over a ninja?” How do I respond to that?
19. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
20. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.

Rings or Drums – An experiment

So many of you who know me IRL have seen the numerous rings that I wear. Also, many of you would recognize the fact that I’m always cold until it’s summer. Lastly, most everyone knows I play the drums. I’ve recently (I’d say the last month or two) developed an issue with my left wrist. I can’t place my finger on the source of the problem, so I’m running some experiments. I can’t tell if it’s the fact that when I’m cold my fingers are smaller, therefore my rings don’t fit right so I fidget with them more and whatnot, or if it’s my new drumming habit that’s fucking with my wrist, or if the fact that I’ve been using computers excessively since I was but a wee lad has finally caught up to me, I dunno, I’m not a doctor.

What I do know is that I’m logical and a fan of the scientific process. That being said, I’ve given @cooljmy10 all my rings to wear for a period of time. This is a double study, in the sense that I’m removing the chance for me to constantly adjust/fix my rings since my fingers are smaller due to colder weather/bad circulation allowing me to rest, and also instigating the same responses in another individual. I’m going to continue to drum during this time, so that way I’m only removing one potential cause at a time. After a week or two, I’m going to see if the pain/discomfort still exists and proceed from there. Prolly end up switching to wearing the rings and stop drumming for an equal period of time.

I’m torn at what I want the results to be… I’d rather be able to wear all my rings AND still drum, thanks. I’d settle for having to do a little physical therapy on my wrist and move on.

Whoops, Blog Broke

Dreamhost has been having some issues lately, and I think it caused my blog to die. I thought it would fix itself, but apparently I needed to contact the emperor to have it fixed. I’m currently prepping for a 4-day drill and a 10-12 hour busride (that’s one direction, we still have to come back on Sunday, too.).  We’re doing weapons qualification, which I’ll do just dandy in. Maybe I’ll get my expert back this time? Eh, we’ll see.

Doing laundry so I can pack. Charging my devices that need charging and doing what I gotta do. Just cleaned up the kitchen (again), I’m betting it’ll be trashed again when I get home since I’m not going to empty the dishwasher after cleaning up everyone’s mess.

I’m most definitely ready for spring. I want warm weather and sun so I can go running and not have the plague and/or poop in my lungs. Bust out my motorcycle and ride that in said warm weather. Yeah… spring…

I wanted to start training in kick boxing again, but the gym I once went to moved just a bit further away, so I thought about starting a club on campus, but apparently kickboxing with padding (not even sparing) promotes violence and has a high chance of injury; whereas rugby with NO padding and lots of injuries is clearly more acceptable. Fuckoff with your beaurocratic horse-shit. You’d have that poop come outta your mouth… you.. you poop-mouth! Yeah… So I just want a small room with pads on the floor and place to hang my heavy bag + Deaftone (not hang Deaftone, but put Deaftone in the room to co-kickbox) and I’d be just peachy. That’s all I want, but can I have it? fuck no. Instead I’d have to spend $90/mo and commute to cambridge (it’s not FAR, but it’s during shitty traffic hours). It’d be a commitment (clearly) and consume lots of time. Time that I’m willing to spend, but I also hate WASTING time doing NOTHING in TRAFFIC. Inefficient use of my time. Something must be done… Anyone have any ideas? Think heavybag…

Ok, time to go play drums while I’m waiting for my laundry to finish. Trying to teach myself how to play:

Travis Barker Soulja Boy Remix

I already can do the breakdown parts, but I can’t do the main rhythm part yet… Travis is a fast bastard. Can’t wait till I get this whole thing down.

ps – I got 10 free days of WoW and I’m only slightly… readdicted. eff.

Seeking Donations

Greetings everyone,

I’m sure you saw my tweet (if any of you are tweeple [sorry, can't help myself]) that I’m currently seeking donations to help out FusTP. I want to get two 1TB Western Digital harddrives and run them in Raid 0. What does that mean to you? That means instead of having 750GB of storage space (which is already full and cycling through content) you would have 2TB of content. Uh, that’s a lot. I pretty much wouldn’t have to worry about deleting things, or making room for other such things, as there would be oodles of space for YOU. Good times had by all. So if you use FusTP at all and would like to see the upgrade happen, please consider donating! Visit http://ironpossum.com to donate. Any amount will help! Yay for free services!

Realization

I am at the peak of my a.d.d. tendencies when it’s night time (10pm or later) after meds have long since worn off. One would think it’s cuz I’m tired and unmotivated? Yeah, not so much. Still awake, doing things, being distracted, talking with roommates, etc. Overall an abundance of the inability to focus on the task at hand. Which… at the moment should be my HOMEWORK that I need to submit before 8am. I’m really close to being done (2 problems left to be precise), but here I am – blogging. Ok… I’ll go finish, but I really want to watch heroes…

Oh, final thought. Maybe I don’t go to bed… cuz I can’t focus on going to bed? The act of going to bed would be the task at hand, but then everything else keeps distracting me from it? hmm…

Me, in 25 bullets or less

1) I generally don’t like doing these things cuz I SHOULD be doing something else, but I’ll do things like this to avoid doing work. I’ve received 3 tags due to this thing in the past 2 days. I also don’t agree with the rules, you don’t have to tag 25 people, this shouldn’t be a chain letter, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.

2) I have a hard time saying “no” to my friends.

3) I hate going to bed, I love sleeping, and I hate waking up. If you can figure it out, let me know.

4) I’m very loyal to my friends. I also don’t use the term “friends” as loosely as facebook does.

5) I tend to avoid most confrontations cuz I don’t like it when people fight. I will generally try to diffuse the situation or remove myself from it entirely if possible. However, I will not hesitate to stand up for what I believe in.

6) I will not (physically) fight my friends, even if they’re fighting me. Bad news for me, but I can’t bring myself to purposefully bring harm to anyone I care about (unless a life is threatened, there’s exceptions to every rule). I will spar with my friends tho, but it’s never full effort…

7) I think I twitter too much, but I’ve been trying to make my tweets more “productive” the longer I have it. I also disabled viewing of any @replies that aren’t directed at me, I follow too many people!

8) People think I know 99 ways to kill a person with one finger because I’m in the military – I usually won’t correct them.

9) If I lost my phone, the internet, and electricity, I would probably curl up in a ball and sleep until it all blew over. (slight exaggeration, but work with me here).

10) I love my family, but usually won’t verbalize anything to that effect.

11) People I meet later in life tend to think that I’m outgoing – Psych, I’m introverted and shy.

12) I started teaching myself how to play drums in July 2008, I enjoy playing along to rock songs while listening to them on my headphones or just jamming with my friends (we need to do that again, btw).

13) If I lost just my phone – I would forget hw, where/when my classes are, and nobody would be able to get in touch with me.

14) I learned to play hockey when I was 12 and played through high school. I will go skating/play pickup hockey at the drop of a hat if ever asked.

15) I’m from Maine, yes I had horse, no I didn’t have cows, yes we have electricity/running water, no we don’t marry our cousins, and yes I’m “used to the cold” this does not mean I’m not cold all the damn time in the winter and will be sure to remind you if prompted to go outside.

16) I was in Iraq for a year. I didn’t kill anyone. They did, however, try to blow us up. And yes, this experience has affected my life greatly. Also, it was very hot (much better than very cold, IMO).

17) I like reading books, but I usually can’t stop doing everything else I’m doing to just sit down and read, thus I haven’t actually READ many books.

18) Most people don’t notice that one of my fingers is shorter than it used to be.

19) I crashed my motorcycle head-on into trash barrels at 55MPH on I-295N back home, and walked away with a story and 3 stitches in my elbow.

20) I have a hard time half-ass’ing things.

21) Music has always played a role in my life in one way shape or form.

22) I enjoy physical fitness and most things related to it, but the winter makes me not want to work out / be outside (this goes back to the being cold thing). Why bother doing something if you won’t enjoy it?

23) I’m not rich by any means, but somehow I’ve always managed never to live check by check and have nice things. Don’t ask me how.

24) I was once held my Physical Fitness Specialist certification, but it has since expired =/. The knowledge didn’t leave me though!

25) I enjoy a clean/clear living space, but I quickly get bored of cleaning. Usually results in certain areas to be really neat and clean, but other areas seem neglected, till it’s their turn, but by then the other area went to hell (not always my fault!)

sonuvabitch

So I stayed up till 4am this morning so I could finish “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien for my lit class, even though I had class from 8am-5pm cuz it was ‘due’ today and we were going to have a quiz over it. She literally told us last Thursday that we had until today to start/finish that book. Good thing I don’t have any work for any other class, right? Anyways, call me crazy but I saw nothing in class today that resembled a quiz or a test of knowledge. Sure there was discussion in class, but… it’s mostly the professor lecturing us with a chance for us to chime in here and there with no ability to further debate our point cuz once you’re done talking you don’t get another turn.

Arguably I’m just sitting here whining about 3.5 hours of sleep two nights in a row, but I feel like I’m one of a handful of people who actually read the book cover to cover in the timeframe given to us with no reward (or more appropriately those who didn’t read it received no repercussions) . This only further instills shitty work ethic to those around me and makes me question why I bothered to put the effort into my task if I would receive the same praise (or lack thereof) if I just read the cliff notes or watched the movie, taking only a couple hours out of my life to accomplish instead of ~15hrs.

Side note, I really liked the book and I had to stop myself from going right on to “Lord of the Rings” cuz 4am = sleep time. Also, I plan on writing my essay (if we have to do one) comparing the Ring to the Arkenstone (heart of the mountain) in that they both have magical corruption powers to which Bilbo’s uncanny ability to maintain a strong moral foundation and tremendous display of integrity prevent him from falling victim to the evils of these items, and he alone can use them for repeated good.
